FACULTY POSITION - TENURE TRACK ORGANIC OR MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB;www.utmb.edu) invites applications to fill a tenure-track Assistant or Associate Professor position in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. The ideal candidates are motivated scientist-educators with dynamic research programs who will provide intellectual leadership in research and complement expertise at UTMB and reginoal institutions. Successful candidates must have a Ph.D. in organic or medicinal chemistry, a competitive record of publications and evidence of the ability to conduct and fund an active research program. Successful candidates will be engaged in teaching and mentoring at the graduate and medical school level, and have the ability to work within a discovery and translational science team comprised of biologists, preclincal and clinical sceintists is a must. State-of-the-art space and resources are available. The accepted candidate will work at the interface of chemistry and biology with a focus on the design and synthesis of biologically active molecules for probing function as well as for developing new small molecule therapeutics or vaccines. Knowledge of molecular modeling, in silico approaches, high-throughput and/or high-content screening with assay development in mind is a plus. Research background and interest in elucidating mechanism-based target pathways in cancer, environmental health or neuroscience is preferred. Specific Job Related Duties
Consistent with the core values of the institution, the Chair, Department of Pharmacology, is responsible for the quality of educational, scientific and clinical programs within the department. The Chair is also responsible for the overall leadership and management of the department consistent with the guidelines set forth in the UTMB Handbook of Operating Procedures and the Board of Regents' Rules and Regulations. This oversight includes the appropriate and optimal use of human, financial, space and other resources to successfully manage the educational and research missions of the department.
Education:
Assures that high quality education programs are provided for postgraduate students within the department, as well as other students who rotate through the department; e.g., medical students, allied health students, nursing students, graduate students and M.D., Ph.D. students. This responsibility extends to all outreach education programs.
Research:
Provides incentive and mentoring for faculty, residents, fellows and students in order to encourage and support scholarship and research. Supports research within the department as well as collaborative efforts with other programs in the university community. Encourages, facilitates, and supports all efforts to acquire research funding.
Preferred Work Experience
Record of leadership and visibility in state and national organizations.
Record of obtaining extramural funding support from agencies such NIH and industry.
Service as chair, vice-chair or in a similar position in an academic setting.

Min Qualifications:
Ph.D. or M.D., Ph.D. degree
