Collection: A 24-hour urine is required. Discard
early morning specimen. Start timing from this point. Collect all urine over the next 24
hours including sample voided at the same time the next morning.
Storage Instructions: Refrigerate during collection
and until delivered to the laboratory.
Causes for Rejection: Samples with a pH
greater than 6.0. See special instructions.
Availability: Samples are received 24 hours per day
at Sample Management, Room 5.136 McCullough.
Turnaround Time: Routine: 4 days; test is performed
on Tuesday and Friday
Special Instructions: Adult collection: Collect in a
clean, amber bottle containing 30 mL of 6N HCl. Pediatric collection: Collect in a clean,
amber bottle containing 15 mL of 6N HCl. Record 24-hour volume on the request form if an
aliquot is sent to the lab. The test can be ordered only once per inpatient admission and
once per month for outpatients. Additional requests must have the approval of the
laboratory directory.

Random sample acidified to pH 1-3.

Reference Ranges: Adult: Metanephrine, 52-341mg/24
hours or 27-155 mcg/g of creatinine; Normetanephrine, 88-444 mcg/24 hours or 46-256 mccg/g
of creatinine; Children: as follows
