LABORATORY COMPLIANCE
ACCREDITATION AND LICENSURE
The
Pathology Clinical Services (PCS) laboratories at the University of Texas
Medical Branch Hospital (UTMB) are licensed by the Centers for Medicare and
Medicaid Services (CMS) under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments
of 1988 (CLIA ’88). The College
of American Pathologists (CAP) is the accrediting organization for all
Divisions with the exception of Tissue Antigen, which is accredited by the American
Society for Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ASHI).
The Blood Bank (transfusion service) is also accredited by the American
Association of Blood Banks (AABB). For additional information or

PCS
laboratories, its employees, and staff are committed to compliance with the
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1997 (HIPAA)
standards ensuring Privacy, Security, and Electronic Transactions of
patient's Protected Health Information (PHI). PCS leadership
participated in and was integral to development of UTMB Policies and
Procedures governing HIPAA compliance.
The
department underwent an exhaustive risk assessment conducted by Ernst &
Young and initiated corrective actions based upon the report.
Additional assessments of departmental compliance were conducted by the UTMB
Office of Institutional Compliance.
