Blocker Scholar Volunteers

As the first man to hold the title of UTMB president, as a pioneer in plastic surgery and burns care and as a mentor and example to hundreds of todays medical leaders, Truman Blocker was one of the seminal figures in American health care.

Through the $5 million Blocker Scholars Initiative, UTMB is taking the opportunity to honor this remarkable man. Through this undertaking, we are encouraging UTMB alumni and friends to provide critical support for the exceptional students in our M.D./Ph.D. Program.

On October 13, 2000, we unveiled the initiative to the public. On that same date, we named one of the most prominent buildings on the UTMB campus in his honor, formally designating the Truman G. Blocker, Jr. Medical Research Building. We hope you will take a moment to learn more about how you can play a part in this special tribute to Dr. Blocker.

The Blocker Scholars Initiative looks to friends and alumni to help us:

Secure $4 million in endowment resources to offer fellowships to support some of our nation’s most gifted and promising physician-scientists enrolled in our MD/Ph.D. Program.
(For available naming opportunities, click here.)

Create a $1 million endowment to establish a distinguished chair in translational research for the M.D./Ph.D. program director, ensuring that the program is well served by a director of the highest caliber. (Click here to find out how the UTMB endowment works.)
