The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston

GENERAL CLINICAL RESEARCH CENTER

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) is in its 45th year, one of the first centers in the nation currently supported by a grant from the National Center for Research Resources (NCRR) GCRC Program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This award is the longest continually funded grant at the UTMB and receives supplemental funding from the institution. The national network of GCRCs provides settings for medical investigators to conduct safe, controlled, state-of-the-art, in-patient and out-patient studies of both children and adults. We also provide infrastructure and resources that support several career development opportunities.

Investigators who have research project funding from NIH and other peer-reviewed sources (e.g. DHHS agencies, research foundations and societies and industry) may use the GCRC. The UTMB GCRC also supports 1-3 pilot studies each year for unfunded investigators who are seeking preliminary data for research funding applications. Because we support a broad spectrum of patient-oriented scientific inquiry, researchers who use the GCRC can benefit from collaborative, multidisciplinary research opportunities.

The Main GCRC is located on the 5th floor of John Sealy Towers.  Here we are easily accessible to investigators and research subjects.  The GCRC has inpatient and outpatient rooms, administrative offices, Metabolic Kitchen, Sleep Laboratory, Core Laboratory, Special Procedures Room, support rooms, a telemedicine room, Informatics Core offices, private dining and waiting rooms, and two  conference rooms for GCRC staff meetings and clinical research education.  Visit our virtual tour.

The GCRC also has two satellite units, one is funded by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) via the NCRR. The GCRC Satellite Flight Analog Research Unit is located in the Children’s Hospital on the 6th floor South. It is a 10-bed inpatient unit specific to the conduct of NASA bedrest studies. Recently, a new 17,000 sq ft. outpatient facility in Texas City was added.
