MANDATORY TRAINING FOR ALL MANAGERS AND SUPERVISORS
First Published 7/12/04

Just a reminder about an innovative new training module being offered by the Office of Equal Opportunity & Diversity called “Building Competency to Manage Diversity.” It’s not diversity awareness training. “Building Competency to Manage Diversity” is a new, exciting and interactive professional development experience designed to show how to bring out the best in all employees. This course will challenge the way you currently think about diversity and how you manage your team.

This lively three-hour session is offered only in the classroom. University leadership is requesting that you take the course by Aug. 31, 2004, but we are encouraging people to take the training as soon as possible. In order to get all supervisors trained in one year, eight general sessions will be offered per month. Thus, it is important that we have an even distribution of participants throughout the year in order to ensure that all supervisors have an opportunity to experience this training.

TO REGISTER FOR THIS TRAINING, log onto www.utmb.edu/online, enter into the training system by entering your username and password, click on “Catalog,” then click on “Building Competency to Manage Diversity,” and select the date in which you wish to attend. Once you have registered, don’t forget to mark your calendar for this date. You will receive a reminder via email the day before you are scheduled to attend.

These sessions will be held in Rebecca Sealy 1.213. Class size is limited. Additional dates will be announced on UTMB’s homepage and the daily email announcements. We look forward to seeing you there.

Am I communicating openly and clearly?
Is it possible that my words or actions are being misinterpreted?
Are my assumptions creating barriers?

We’re all different. We have different work methods, different communication styles, and different personal values. All too often, simple biases and assumptions get in the way of open communication. At UTMB, you are expected to function in a diverse work environment and keep personal feelings separated from business. While this sounds easy conflicts can arise in a diverse workforce like ours. Deadline is near: Common Threads Diversity Fair and Campus Celebration
First Published 7/9/04

Common Threads—A Celebration of Diversity at UTMB is set for July 12-16, and another great week of events is planned. (See the schedule at www.utmb.edu/diversitycouncil.)

A highlight last year was the Diversity Fair and Campus Celebration. It returns on Friday, July 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Levin Hall Foyer and Dining Room. The fair will feature free food from distant lands, exhibits of art, crafts and collectibles, the new Support Staff Professionals diversity quilt, presentation of essay contest winners, music, entertainment and more. But we need help to make this popular event another success.

Do you have a hobby or collection you'd like to share? Do you paint, sculpt, take photos, make jewelry or crafts, collect music or do some other activity that speaks to who you are as an individual? Do you play a unique regional instrument (sitar, bagpipes, steel drum, etc.) or music style? Would you like to share your passion, talent or skills with others? Or, would you be willing to contribute your time as a volunteer?

If so, we need you. We'll supply a space, table or display board—and electric power if you need it. If you volunteer, we'll provide the assignment. You supply the creativity and a little bit of your time. BUT HURRY: THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER FOR SPACE IS MONDAY, JULY 12.
