2009 Conference
April 30, May 1-2, 2009
The 2009 conference will focus on
Emergency Management of Persons with Disabilities: Preparedness,
Response, and Recovery.
Hardly a week goes by without
individuals in one part of the country or another experiencing an
environmental challenge or disaster, impacting if not completely
overturning their day-to-day lives. Hurricanes, ice-storms, heavy
rains or snow, mudslides, forest fires, falling bridges, and toxic
exposure have become all too common. While emergency management
staffs are slowly becoming sensitive to the additional challenges
faced by individuals with physical disabilities, little
consideration has been given to the needs of individuals with
cognitive disabilities such as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) in these
situations. The Transitional Learning Center (TLC) in Galveston,
Texas has been faced with evacuation of its residents to cope with
the effects of hurricanes Rita and Ike. The experiences of our
colleagues at the TLC and UTMB will be foundation of the Galveston
2009 conference. Experts in diverse fields will address, from
clinical, policy and research perspectives, issues of emergency
management faced by first responders, other professionals and
individuals with TBI.
Drs. Wayne Gordon and Marcel Dijkers of Mt Sinai will be the program
leaders.
